Creating a Bookcase

October 4, 2018

If you follow me at all on instagram, you know from watching my Instagram Story that I brought home a couple of treasures the other night. A little while ago I bought some bookcases for $50 a piece and the other night I finally brought them home.  I don’t know if they are really considered bookcases, maybe more of a display case.  I intend on putting books in them so, to me, they are bookcases and I need a DIY bookcase project.  We have been in our home for 3 years and ALL of our books are STILL in boxes.  No, I don’t like it and yes I am just as appalled.

They are the tops to cabinets and I don’t know where the bottoms are.  The truth is that it really doesn’t bother me.  That is probably why they were $50.  They are so heavy and such good quality.  Clearly each one was meant to sit on top of a cabinet of the same quality and probably equally as heavy.

I scoured the internet to find a place that I could buy the bottom cabinets from and I haven’t had any luck. I think all together it is supposed to look something like this cabinet below but they don’t make it anymore.  So now I only have the top piece and need to put together an idea of what I want to do with these to create the bookcases I need.

What I want to do is create two stand alone cases in the front room.  I wanted to build a floor to ceiling library wall with a ladder, but I haven’t had time for that.  So I need to create this for now and be done until I can get to that library wall.  I don’t need any other projects to start before the holidays but want it done before the holidays….so this is either it for “now” or “ever”.  I’m not sure.  I have an idea that I have taken from my head and put on to paper, but I also like to look around and see what is out there.

I think the last one from Pottery Barn is my favorite.  I would probably add prettier feet to it, but I love the drawers.  It is a simple build and I just need to do it. I really want it done, but I HAVE to finish the basement bathroom first (nope, not done yet).  For now I may just have to put them against the wall in the study the way they are and fill them with books.  They will look a little funny sitting on the floor the way they are, but at least the books would be out of boxes and the room will look better than it does right now!

I do have some really great news that I can’t wait to tell you.  It will be so good for my family and I am so happy.  I will be telling you all that next week.  Tell me which cabinet you like the best!  Obviously I can’t make these cabinets, but I just wanted inspiration.  I would love to hear from you!  Make sure you have signed up for my newsletter so you don’t miss a post!
